The Red Wing Amsterdam Soundtrack: January

Anyone who has ever visited the Red Wing Shoe Store Amsterdam knows that music is important to us. The songs that we play during the day say a lot about the store and our people. Music-wise, we have got an actual Rock ‘n Roll star in our team (no joke!), a born-in-the-wrong-era Nirvana fanboy and a 70’s funk specialist, to name a few. We also get a lot of musical recommendations from people like you, in the store and online through Instagram and Facebook. We want to start sharing some these songs with you! Therefore, we are introducing the Red Wing Amsterdam Soundtrack. This will be our new monthly music column. With our Spotify playlist, we want to give you the opportunity to tune in on the music that we are currently playing at our Amsterdam store. Every month, we will be putting three songs into some extra spotlight by telling you a little bit more about them. This way we hope to inspire you to give some of our favourite artists a listen. All you have to do is follow our playlist on Spotify; we will update you whenever a an update drops! The Red Wing Amsterdam January Soundtrack features classics of legends like Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie, as well as some recent releases by artists you might not know very well. The young, but talented Benjamin Booker, for example. Sven Hammond is also featured in the playlist. You can listen to all the songs on the Spotify Red Wing Amsterdam Soundtrack playlist!
  1. After Smoke – Sven Hammond
Sven Hammond is a Dutch soul and rock band led by Sven ‘Hammond’ Figee. Sven is an insanely talented keyboardist and has made himself quite a name in the Dutch music industry. The band’s latest studio album Rapture was released in September. The album puts their improvising skills and intuition in the spotlight. They did the writing, recording, mixing and producing all by themselves. We very much advice you to give it a listen.
  1. Suffragette City – David Bowie
Wham bam thank you ma’am! David Bowie has been a regular to our store’s speakers ever since it opened in 2011. The ‘fast-paced, glam rock’-ish Suffragette City was recorded in 1972 and released as a part of the Ziggy Stardust album. We heard it while watching HBO’s Vinyl, a (crazy awesome!) series developed by Martine Scorsese and Mick Jagger. Unfortunately, the series was discontinued after its first season. Give us season two!
  1. The Man Who Sold the World – Nirvana
Originally released by David Bowie, Nirvana covered The Man Who Sold the World during their truly iconic MTV Unplugged session. They introduced the song to a whole new audience. Their chilling rendition of the song became one the band’s most memorable acoustic performances. It was featured in last year’s Dutch Top 2000 of best songs ever. We were stoked to hear it again and decided to include it this month. https://open.spotify.com/user/mitchdevries/playlist/04YB3Yo2WWXbSjp9ftV4BK
