15 Years in The Reestraat

Inside Red Wing Amsterdam with Clutch Magazine

It has been fifteen years since Red Wing Amsterdam first opened its doors. What has defined it through that time goes beyond the boots on its shelves; it’s the community that has grown around them. Tucked into The Reestraat, the store has long been shaped by the energy of its surroundings: independent retailers, creative studios, and a steady mix of locals and visitors who value things made with intention. From the beginning, it became a natural meeting place for people drawn to garments that stand up to daily life and gather meaning through use. That shared appreciation for craft and longevity sits at the centre of why this milestone matters.

To mark the occasion, Clutch Magazine has produced a feature exploring the store’s journey. Based in Japan and renowned for its deep knowledge of workwear, vintage menswear, and the cultures of making, Clutch has a longstanding commitment to telling the stories of those who understand quality from the inside out. Their editorial approach, guided by a respect for tradition and a curiosity for the communities that sustain them, makes them an ideal partner in telling this chapter.

Red Wing’s wider story begins in Minnesota in 1905, where the brand has produced purpose-built work boots using methods that have remained largely unchanged for more than a century. Goodyear welting, oil-tanned leathers from the S.B. Foot Tannery, and silhouettes rooted in American labour traditions continue to form the foundations of its identity today. When the team behind Tenue opened Red Wing Amsterdam in 2010, they carried that legacy into a new setting. Their belief in durable garments, considered design, and pieces that gather character over time aligned naturally with Red Wing’s philosophy. The store’s culture — its focus on education, fitting, repair, and long-term relationships — stems from that shared understanding of quality as something lived rather than simply constructed.

Fifteen years later, the result is a community shaped by countless conversations and a steady commitment to things that only improve with age. Our doors remain open to all, and we look forward to welcoming some new faces who want to experience that spirit for themselves. Below, in conversation with Clutch Magazine, the Red Wing Amsterdam team reflects on that journey and the years still ahead.

When did the shop first open?

We first opened our doors on July 24th, 2010. Last month we celebrated 15 years of Red Wing Amsterdam. We are proud of how far we have come and are ready for the next 15 years.

What made you decide to open it?

I have always had a passion for denim and boots from as early as I can remember. I was inspired by the timeless style and longevity that Red Wing is known for. The Red Wing Shoe Company has remained true to its roots for over 120 years, with no shortcuts in any of its products. All of the boots are handmade to last, and I will always choose quality over quantity.

Which model has been your all-time best seller?

Without a doubt, the 875 Classic Moc Toe. First introduced in 1952, it has become the most classic silhouette. We see it as the go-to boot for all circumstances. The comfort of the traction sole is unmatched, and the Oro Legacy leather is one of the finest leathers ever produced by the S.B. Foot Tannery.

Which styles are most popular these days?

Our two most popular collections are the Iron Ranger and the Moc Toe. Within these, the classic 875 Moc Toe and the 8111 Iron Ranger stand out. However, among our team, the all-time favorite is the 8881 Olive Mohave Moc Toe, as we have a special appreciation for roughout leathers.

This Fall you're releasing the 1930s Engineer, the 1940s Logger, and the 1950s Pecos from the archives. Which one are you most looking forward to?

If I had to choose two, it would be the Engineer boots and the Logger collection. I am currently breaking in my Klondike Engineer boots, which I like to pair with my bootcut Tenue jeans—my standard uniform. I am also looking forward to the new Logger collection. In terms of function, the Logger boot is as tough as it gets. With a heavy lug sole and a storm welt, it is built for all terrain and weather conditions.

What kind of style do most of your customers have?

That is a difficult question to answer because we have a very international customer base in Amsterdam. We meet customers drawn to contemporary style as well as those more interested in heritage styling, and everything in between. This variety keeps us inspired and engaged.

What age group do you mostly see in your customers?

We welcome customers of all ages, and there is no single group that defines us. We are noticing more young people choosing to invest in quality items that will last. This excites us, as we enjoy sharing the story of how our shoes are made and the craftsmanship behind each pair.

Aside from Red Wing, what other brands do you carry?

We carry Yoshida Porter bags, which we value for their design and attention to detail. More recently, we have also introduced sweatshirts and T-shirts from Tenue.
