The Limited Edition Round Toe

We’re proud to launch a very special limited edition release: The 8167 Round Toe boot crafted in Hawthorne Abilene Rough-out Leather.

Until now, this model has only been available in Japan. Now, it’s arriving exclusively at Red Wing Shoe Stores in Europe. This is a unique opportunity to own a true piece of Red Wing history, a design that embodies the craftsmanship and quiet strength of America’s original work boots.

A Model Rooted in Red Wing History

The Round Toe traces its lineage back to Red Wing’s earliest work and hunting boots of the 1940s, when the brand perfected its now iconic “seamless back” construction. This design (without a rear seam) provided greater comfort, fewer weak points, and superior resistance to water ingress.

Evolving from the Style No. 766, introduced in the early 1950s, the Round Toe became a foundational Red Wing silhouette. It represented the perfect balance between functionality and simplicity: a sturdy 6-inch work boot designed to take whatever the day delivered.

By the 1990s, the Round Toe had developed a cult following. The #8167, introduced in 1995, extended the family line by pairing this same timeless build with one of Red Wing’s most iconic leathers (Oro Russet) connecting it directly to the Irish Setter tradition.

The Leather: Hawthorne Abilene Rough-out

The star of this limited edition is its leather. Red Wing’s Rough-out Leather first appeared on the Pecos #1188 back in 1959 and has remained a core part of the brand’s heritage ever since.

Unlike suede, which is split leather, rough-out retains the grain on the underside, offering both durability and comfort. This construction brings two distinct advantages:

  • Breathability – The inner grain naturally absorbs and disperses perspiration, helping to keep the interior of the boot dry, even in warm conditions.
  • Durability – Because the grain remains intact, the boot’s strongest layer is preserved, while the outer surface resists scratches and scuffs from hard use.

The Hawthorne Abilene Rough-out variant holds a particularly special place in Red Wing’s story. In Japan, it became one of the brand’s three most iconic leathers, alongside Oro Russet and Black Chrome. First used on the #8173 Moc Toe and later the #8268 Engineer, this light, sandy-textured leather captures the rugged essence of American workwear in its purest form.
